Football: Discoverers’ Offense “Loaded With Weapons”

Things are different this year as the Columbus High football team prepares to kick off its season this Friday.  Discoverers coach Craig Williams said among the changes due to COVID-19, the junior varsity will no longer practice with the varsity players as a precaution.

The Columbus offense is led by senior quarterback CJ Fleeman.  Williams says the third-year starter has grown a lot in terms of experience and also physically, adding “about 12 pounds of muscle” in the off-season.

Williams said his team’s offense is “loaded with weapons” despite losing Joey Braasch and Landon Thompson to graduation.  He said Mason Moore, Garrett Esch, Trey Kobza and Ernest Hausmann can all make plays.

The Discoverers defense features a strong linebacking corps that includes Blayze Standley, Moore and Hausmann.

Originally scheduled to open at home against now idle OPS foe Omaha Central, CHS will instead entertain Scottsbluff on Friday.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and you can hear play-by-play on KLIR 101.
