Flyers Downed by Irish in Defensive Battle in Girls D2 Semifinal

Humphrey St. Francis was outscored 10-2 in the fourth quarter and overtime in a 33-29 loss to rival Falls City Sacred Heart in a girls basketball semifinal Friday night.

The two teams, which had split wins in the D2 finals each of the past two seasons, were tied 17-all at the half.  The Flyers took a 27-23 lead into the final period, but the Irish tied it at 29-29 at the end of regulation.

Saint Francis’ defense came up with three takeaways late in the fourth quarter, but only scored two points off them.

Top-seeded Sacred Heart scored all four points in the extra period to advance to the state championship game with a 25-3 record.

The No. 5 seed Flyers are 20-7 heading into tomorrow’s third place game, which tips off at 3 p.m. at Lincoln Northwest.
