Discoverers Football Team Wins Tense Opener at Fremont

Columbus High’s football team won a wild season opener 28-21 at rival Fremont on Friday night.

The Discoverers’ defense stopped Tigers quarterback Hudson Cunnings just shy of the end zone pylon on the game’s final play, as his bid for an 11-yard touchdown run was denied.  Columbus High fullback Liam Blaser scored on a one-yard run, his third touchdown of the night, with less than two minutes remaining to break a 21-all tie.

It was the first battle for the F&C Cup since 2019, when the Discoverers won 33-13 at Fremont.  CHS has won six of the last seven meetings, although the Tigers lead the all-time series 49-44-2.

In the only other area game among six Week Zero contests played in the state, Riverside edged Summerland 27-26 in Spalding.
