Shamrocks Hold Off Rival Vikings in Boys Subdistrict Opener

It turns out you can take the Scotus-Lakeview rivalry out of Columbus, but you can’t take the excitement out of the rivalry.

The Shamrocks edged the Vikings 54-51 in Geneva last night in the opener of the boys basketball C1-6 subdistrict tournament.

Late in the fourth quarter, Blake Rathbone hit a three-pointer to give the Vikings a 45-44 lead.  A few seconds later, with 1:21 remaining, Jackson Heng nailed a three as the Shamrocks took the lead for good.  Heng scored nine of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, going 4-for-4 at the free throw line after his trey.  Scotus’ Cohen Pelan had a game-high 15 points.

Rathbone led Lakeview with 14 points, but the Vikings season ended with an 8-15 record, 0-3 vs. their city rival.  Scotus is 9-13 and plays at top-seeded Fillmore Central tonight.  Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., followed by the second subdistrict semifinal between Central City and Aurora.  Both games will be aired on KZ-100.
