Sanford is Ready for Expanded Role at Illinois

Nebraska defensive back Phalen Sanford has been a key part of the Huskers’ special teams.

With DeShon Singleton suffering an injury last Saturday, Sanford is preparing for Friday’s game at Illinois knowing he’ll play more snaps on defense.  The senior says he feels bad for Singleton, but adds the Huskers have had a “next man up” mentality since fall camp.

“The nice thing about our defense is all the DB’s train to play any position,” Sanford said.  “You can take the rovers, field safeties, boundary safeties and you can move them wherever.  We all know what we’re doing.”

Friday’s kickoff at Illinois is set for 7 p.m.  The pregame starts at 3 p.m. on News Talk 900 KJSK and at 6:30 on 93.5 The Hawk.
