Former Nebraska football player and state senator Jim McFarland has died. 

According to media reports, he died Friday at his Omaha home.  The 73-year old McFarland had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. 

McFarland played tight end for the Huskers in the late 60’s, earning All-Big Eight status in his senior year of 1969.  He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1999. 

After his NU career, he went on to play in the NFL for six seasons, five of them with the St. Louis Cardinals. 

Following his NFL career, McFarland went to law school, became an attorney and went on to serve as a state senator from 1986 to 1990.
