Cornerstone Columbus Seniors Blanked by Burke in State Tourney

Cornerstone Insurance Group Columbus Seniors mustered only two singles in an 11-0 loss to Burke in the first game of the National Division state tournament in Hastings on Saturday.

Burke starter Thomas Reid went six innings to get the win and improve to 8-1.  He only allowed a bloop single by Wyatt Swanson leading off the bottom of the second.  Reid walked one and struck out five.  Alex Griffith led off the seventh against Burke reliever Holden Kleveter with a pinch-hit single to left for Cornerstone’s only other hit.

Columbus starter Brennan Jelinek allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits over three innings.  Keiton Watchorn was touched for three runs on three hits in his two innings of relief.  Quenton Gustafson pitched the final two innings and was charged with two unearned runs.

Cornerstone, which had won three straight games to claim the A6 area title, slipped to 17-12 on the season.  Columbus will meet Millard South in an elimination game Sunday morning.  First pitch at Duncan Field is at 10 a.m.
