NU’s Matthews, Anderson, UNO’s Boeve Picked in MLB Draft

Nebraska shortstop Brice Matthews was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft last night. 

Matthews was the No. 28 pick overall, becoming the seventh first-round selection in NU history.  Husker second baseman Max Anderson heard his name called by the Detroit Tigers in the second round.  He was the 45th overall pick of the draft, which is being held in Seattle. 

Mike Boeve became the highest draft pick in Omaha Mavericks history when the Milwaukee Brewers selected the third baseman 54th overall in the second round. 

The Pittsburgh Pirates chose LSU ace Paul Skenes with the top pick.  Skenes went 12-3 with 209 strikeouts in 122 innings in helping lead the  Tigers to the College World Series championship.

Kansas City had the eighth overall pick and used it to draft Texas high school catcher Blake Mitchell.
