Flyers Fall Late to Shelton in Boys State Hoops Tourney

A young Humphrey St. Francis boys basketball team made a bid to upset No. 1 seed Shelton as the D2 state basketball tournament opened today, but the Flyers fell 65-59.

Eighth-seeded St. Francis took a 57-56 lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs got back-to-back two-point field goals to pull ahead 60-57 with just 33 seconds left and made four free throws down the stretch at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Flyers, with Emerson Krings being the only senior on the team, wound up a 17-8 campaign that included their first trip to state since 2021.

Shelton moved on to the semifinals with a 24-1 record.
