Cougars Win Boys State Basketball Debut Over Summerland

Cross County won its boys state basketball tournament debut Wednesday.

The Cougars, seeded No. 5 in the C2 tourney, pulled away from fourth-seeded Summerland in the final period for a 44-30 victory.  Cross County went on a 14-0 run in the first and second quarters to lead 16-6.  The Cougars were up 20-14 at the half, and led 31-26 after three at the Devaney Sports Center.

The victory came in the school’s first state tourney game since Benedict and Stromsburg consolidated their school districts in 2002.  Summerland, a 2020 co-op of Clearwater, Ewing and Orchard, lost its first-ever state tourney tilt and finished 21-4.

Cross County is now 23-5 and will take on No. 1 seed Amherst (24-2) in Friday’s semifinals back at Devaney.  Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on 93.5 The Hawk.
