CHS Football Falls in Overtime, Tennis and Softball Results

Columbus High’s football team saw a 21-7 lead evaporate in a 35-28 overtime loss Friday in the season opener for the Maroon Cup rivals.

Discoverers junior running back Michael Voichoskie ran for 135 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.  On defense, he also came up with one of Columbus’ three interceptions.

However, the biggest interception of the night was the only one thrown by CHS senior quarterback Will Wickham with the Discoverers up 28-21 and just over two minutes left in the game.  The Panthers cashed in with a four-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 28-all with 1:04 remaining.

In the overtime, Norfolk scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass and the Discoverers couldn’t answer on their possession.

Columbus couldn’t ask for a tougher home opener next Friday, when the Discoverers host defending Class A state champion Westside.

In other sports Friday, the CHS boys tennis team finished sixth at a tennis tournament in Lincoln.  Senior Joaquin Azurduy went 4-0 in #1 singles and was crowned the tourney champion.  Meanwhile, the Discovers softball club went 1-1 in a tournament at Lincoln.  Columbus fell to Waverly 15-2, but defeated Lincoln Northeast 6-4.  The Discoverers are 1-6 on the season.
