Veteran CHS Wrestling, Boys’ Golf Coach Benson Dies

Long-time Columbus High coach Rick Benson has died.  He was 67. 

Benson became the Discoverers wrestling head coach in 1985.  Over 30 years in that role, he coached 16 state champions and 101 state medalists.  He retired as a wrestling coach in 2014. 

Benson had currently been serving as the CHS boys’ golf coach.  He held that position from 1994 through 2008, then retired but stayed on as an assistant golf coach until 2012, when he became the team’s head coach again. 

Benson is survived by his wife, Jeanie and children Derek, Jonathan and Michelle. 

Due to COVID-19, a private service will be held at Gass-Haney Funeral Home this Wednesday at 10 a.m.  The funeral service will be broadcast live on the Gass-Haney Facebook page.
