Two People; Patrol Canine Killed In Train Collision After Pursuit In York County
YORK- On Tuesday, at 11:02 pm, the York County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a pickup driving erratically near the intersection of Road H and Road 15 west of York.
A pursuit ensued at speeds in excess of 100mph and continued to Road H and Road 18 where the vehicle stopped. Officers attempted a high risk vehicle stop when the suspect exited the vehicle and claimed to have a gun. The suspect then hid his hands and stated to officers he wanted to die. The suspect then gained control of a patrol canine unit and fled into York. The suspect would then stop at 19th Street and Delaware Ave on the railroad tracks. The suspect then exited the vehicle and stood on the railroad tracks as a train approached. Officers then attempted to regain control of the patrol unit but the suspect reentered the vehicle and proceeded northbound on Delaware Ave. The suspect then turned around and headed back toward the train at a high rate of speed and struck the back of a vehicle that was waiting for the train. The impact pushed the vehicle into the train.
The suspect, the driver of the vehicle, and the canine in the patrol unit were killed instantly. The names of those involved have not been released.
