Three Creighton baseball players all saw action last night in the opening game of the Collegiate Summer Baseball Invitational.

Bluejays Jonah Smith, Cam Frederick and Ryan Mantle played in the contest, which marked the first team sport to be played in America since COVID-19 struck.

While there were no fans in the stands of the ballpark in Bryan, Texas, those watching the game on ESPN2 were treated to Liberty’s 11-10 victory over Unity in 10 innings.  Smith helped Liberty to the win by tossing two scoreless innings, notching five strikeouts.

The CSBI’s extra inning rules allowed both teams to start the tenth inning with the bases loaded and no outs.  Liberty scored five runs in the top of the frame, while Unity tallied four runs in the bottom of the 10th.

While last night’s action was aired on ESPN2, the four-team tournament’s games tonight and tomorrow night can be streamed, for a subscription fee, at csbi2020.com.  Five percent of each streaming subscription will be donated to No Kid Hungry.
