Jacob Sjuts pitched scoreless baseball for six innings and the Bank of the Valley Lakeview Seniors survived a seventh inning rally by Roncalli to win 6-4 Monday in the Class B American Legion state tournament.  In its first-ever appearance in the state tourney, Lakeview has advanced to tonight’s semifinals.

Sjuts took a three-hit shutout into the top of the seventh inning Monday evening, before he hit two batters with pitches and walked one, while also notching his seventh strikeout.  He left with one out and the bases loaded.  Cooper Tessendorf came on in relief and gave up a two-run single to the first batter he faced.  An error allowed a third run, and a fielder’s choice RBI made it 6-4 and brought the tying run to the plate.  But, Tessendorf retired the final batter on a fly out to notch the save.  Sjuts improved to 6-2 with the win.  Lakeview is 18-3 overall and is 2-1 in the state tournament.

Also Monday, surprising host club Crete eliminated Central City/Fullerton 6-4.  In the late game, Norris Hickman downed Alliance 6-3.  Lakeview will meet 3-0 Hickman tonight.  First pitch is at 7 p.m. on 93.5 The Hawk.
