Shocking Day of Cancellations Affects Omaha

It was a shocking day of cancellations in college and professional sports yesterday due to the spread of the coronavirus.

The Big East canceled its men’s basketball tournament at halftime of Creighton’s game against St. John’s, with the Bluejays down 38-35.

The Big Ten canceled the rest of its men’s basketball tourney too, before the NCAA announced there will be no men’s or women’s national tournaments.  Omaha was ready to host NCAA men’s tourney games next week. More than two dozen other men’s and women’s championships won’t be contested this winter and spring either.

Not only was the regular season halted for Nebraska and Creighton baseball, but the College World Series will not be held for the first time since 1946.  It’s been held in Omaha every year since 1950 and is the NCAA’s number two revenue producer.
