SCHUYLER- Part of downtown Schuyler was evacuated Wednesday do to a gas leak.

At 3:01 p.m., local authorities and the Schuyler Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene at 12th and B St. According to Colfax County Attorney Denise Kracl, authorities immediately noticed the odor of natural gas coming from the area and evacuated an eight square block area which included two grocery stores, two banks, the Colfax County Courthouse, and city hall. Kracl says Black Hills Energy was able to repair the leak around 7:00 p.m. and determined that the leak was caused by a building excavation and demolition crew working in the area.
