Lakeview Captures Its First Football Championship

Lakeview claimed its first state football championship in history today, as the Vikings beat defending C1 champion Pierce 37-25 at Memorial Stadium.

The Vikings took a 24-6 lead into halftime courtesy of a 21-point second quarter that was capped by a fake field goal play for a touchdown.  With 39 seconds left in the half, Mason Klug was on to apparently try to hit his second 33-yard field goal of the game, but Adam Van Cleave tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Turner Halvorsen.

Van Cleave also scored a touchdown himself, as did fellow Lakeview seniors Mason Viergutz and Kolby Blaser.  On defense, Van Cleave had an interception and Braxton Borer returned a fumble 56 yards for a score.

Pierce quarterback Abram Scholting threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, two going to Michael Kruntorad who had 105 yards receiving and a game-high 78 yards rushing.

Lakeview’s win capped off a 10-game victory string to end an 11-2 season.  It avenged a 28-27 loss September 3rd at Pierce.  The Bluejays finished 10-3 and as C1 runner-ups for the second time in the last three seasons.
