Kernels Season Ends in State Tourney Loss to Malcolm

Central City/Centura was eliminated from the Class C state baseball tournament Wednesday.

The Kernels were downed by defending state champion and top-seeded Malcolm, falling 4-2.  The game was tied at 1-all going into the bottom of the sixth when the Clippers started the inning with a single and back-to-back RBI doubles off Kernels starter Jake Ruhl.  He retired the next three batters, but the second out was a sacrifice fly that put the Clippers up 4-1.

In the top of the seventh, Connor Erickson led off with a single, and wound up scoring on a two-out, RBI single by Parker Zikmund to make it 4-2.  But, Blake Jensen was called out on strikes to end the game.

Central City/Centura wound up with a 19-8 record, including a 2-2 mark in the state tourney.  Both of the Kernels losses were to Malcolm, which heads into Friday’s championship game with a 3-0 record at state, 22-3 overall.
