The biggest upset of the night was also the best game as the eight-man football playoffs opened Thursday.  In D1 action, number 13 seed Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family’s defense stopped a two-point conversion try by fourth-seed Lutheran High Northeast with nine seconds left as the Bulldogs won 36-35.

Elsewhere in D1, Cross County pulled away from Clarkson/Leigh 45-12, Howells-Dodge defeated Elmwood-Murdock 56-32 and Nebraska Christian rallied for a 22-15 victory over Arcadia-Loup City.

In D2 first round action, Humphrey St. Francis beat Allen 42-14, Riverside routed Sandhills Valley 74-20, Osceola stomped Homer 70-27 and Fullerton fell to defending champion BDS 66-34.

The winners in both classes will be reseeded for next Friday’s second round.
