Girls Soccer Loses Heartbreaker in Shootout at State

Columbus High’s girls soccer club lost a heartbreaker on the opening day of state soccer Monday.

The Discoverers fell to Lincoln Pius X 4-3 in shootout penalty kicks, giving the Thunderbolts a 2-1 win in the Class A quarterfinals.

Early in the second half, Columbus broke a scoreless tie with a goal by Callen Heule off an Abby Haynes assist.  But, Pius tied the match with just under six minutes left in regulation.  Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.

In the shootout, CHS led 1-0 after each club’s first two penalty kicks, but the Bolts tied it on their third PK.  Each team made its next two kicks, sending the shootout to sudden death tied at 3-all.  The Discoverers missed the next PK, but Pius converted to improve to 15-2 and advance to Friday’s semifinals.

Columbus finished with an 11-6 record and its first state tourney appearance since 2018.
