Former Husker, NFL Defensive Guru Monte Kiffin Dies

Monte Kiffin, whose defenses helped Nebraska football win two national titles, died Thursday.  He was 84.

After playing at NU in the early 60s, Kiffin was first a defensive coach, then defensive coordinator, for the Huskers from 1969 through 1976.  He made other coaching stops in college football before spending 13 seasons as the defensive coordinator in the NFL for Tampa Bay.  Kiffin’s ultra-successful Tampa 2 defensive scheme helped the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl in 2003.

The Lexington, Nebraska native passed away surrounded by family and friends in Oxford, Mississippi, where his son, Lane, is coach of the Rebels.
