Omaha sports fans are mourning the death of Gale Sayers.  He passed away yesterday at age 77.

Sayers starred in football and track at Omaha Central High, prior to becoming a standout football player at Kansas and a Hall of Fame running back for the Chicago Bears.

NFL players of different colors didn’t share hotel rooms on the road when the Bears put Sayers and Brian Piccolo together in 1967.  They got off to a rocky start since they were competing for the same spot, but wound up supporting each other through injury and illness – a story recounted in the 1971 film “Brian’s Song.”
