Columbus Seniors Go 1-1 Saturday, Junior Blues Get First Win
The Cornerstone Insurance Group Columbus Seniors went 1-1 on Saturday in a tournament at Ablion.
Columbus beat Central City 5-1, but was edged by York 4-3 in the Cornerstone Classic. In the win, starter Alex Griffith allowed just one run on six hits over 6.2 innings. He did not walk a batter and notched eight strikeouts. Seth Brandl got the final out. Grant Zoucha went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
In the loss to York, Cornerstone starter Quenton Gustafson gave up three runs in 5.0 frames. He walked four and fanned four batters. Keiton Watchorn gave up a key insurance run in the sixth, as York went up 4-1. Columbus had a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, but could not get the tying or winning run across in the seventh. The Seniors are 2-2 on the season, including a 2-1 mark in the tourney, and are set to take on Geneva on Sunday.
The OneNebraska Federal Credit Union Junior Blues edged Lincoln Southeast 1-0 at Pawnee Park on Saturday. The Junior Blues’ only hit in the game was a big one, as Dylan Kay homered in the bottom of the sixth. Starter Easton Bell allowed just two hits and no walks in six innings, striking out four. Cam Gustafson completed the three-hit shutout, giving up a single and a walk but striking out two batters in the top of the seventh.
Columbus evened its season record at 1-1. The Junior Blues host Norfolk next Thursday.
