Cardinals Almost Dash Auburn’s Hopes for 3-Peat in Crete

In boys basketball district finals, Boone Central almost ended Auburn’s hopes for a three-peat in Crete.  But, the two-time defending C1 state champion Bulldogs survived the Cardinals’ second-half rally to win 48-41.

Boone Central trailed 35-19 in the third quarter, when the Cardinals went on a 14-0 run to get within two points.  Auburn’s lead would shrink to one point twice, the final time at 42-41, before the Bulldogs scored the final six points of the game.

Auburn barely extended its winning streak to 59 games and advances to next week’s boys state tournament, while Boone Central ends with a 13-13 record.

Other C1 district final scores last night: Central City bowed at Kearney Catholic 67-36 and North Bend Central fell at Omaha Concordia 59-47.  In C2, Twin River was downed at GICC 75-43.  And Howells-Dodge is headed to the D1 state tourney after a 43-36 home win over Mead.
