Both Discoverers Hoops Teams Post Wins Monday in OPS Invite

The Columbus High girls basketball team will play in the championship game of the season-opening OPS Invitational tournament Wednesday night.   

In Monday night’s semifinals, the Discoverers beat Omaha Benson 49-45.  Charli Preister and Grayson Gentile each scored 10 points to lead Columbus, while Eastyn Luebbe added nine and Abby Haynes had eight points in the Discoverers balanced attack.  Ayla Janssen chipped in with six points, all in the second half, as Benson was trying to rally from a 27-19 halftime deficit. 

CHS is now 2-0 and will meet another 2-0 team in Omaha Westview in Wednesday’s championship game.  Tipoff at Burke High is set for 5:30 p.m. 

Meanwhile, the Discoverers boys notched their first win of the season.  In the 11th place game of the tourney, Columbus topped Omaha Northwest 58-45.  CHS raced out to a 15-2 lead after one quarter and led 32-9 by halftime. 

The Discoverers Quinn Freshour scored a game-high 17 points and Jaxson Vasicek added 14.  The win upped the Discoverers record to 1-2.
