Baseball: CHS Wins District Title to Make State Tourney

Columbus High’s baseball team won a district championship last night, earning a trip to the state tournament for the first time since 1953.

The Discoverers completed a rain-delayed 7-4 victory over Lincoln East by scoring an insurance run in the top of the 10th inning.  In the bottom of the 10th, the Spartans had runners at second and third with two outs, when Columbus right fielder Tadan Bell’s diving catch of a line drive ended the game.

The Discoverers will return to Den Hartog Field in Lincoln on Saturday.  Number-8 seed Columbus will take its 18-13 record up against top-seeded Millard South.  The Patriots are 30-4 entering the 10 a.m. contest.

Central City/Fullerton/Centura is the number-6 seed in the Class B state tourney.  The Kernels are 19-5 and will meet third-seeded Skutt Catholic, at 17-6, on Saturday.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Werner Park.
