Ruhl, Gorecki Combine for One-Hitter in State Tourney

Central City/Centura starter Jake Ruhl came within two outs of throwing a no-hitter in Saturday’s first round of the Class C state baseball tournament in Elkhorn.

Ruhl and fellow junior Mason Gorecki wound up combining on a one-hitter in a 4-0 win over DC West.  Through the first six innings, Ruhl retired 18 of 19 batters, having only hit a Falcons batter with a pitch leading off the top of the third.

With one out in the seventh, DC West’s Michael Croom banged a double deep into left-center field to break up the no-hitter.  After a walk, Gorecki came on in relief and walked his first batter to load the bases.  The next hitter lofted a pop fly toward shallow right field, but Kernels second baseman Parker Zikmund made a diving catch for the second out.  Gorecki then fanned the final DC West batter to preserve the shutout.

The Kernels scored their four runs in the fifth, with Connor Erickson delivering a key two-run single for his third hit of the game.  Ruhl joined Erickson with a three-hit day.

The win improved Central City/Centura to 18-7.  The Kernels will play Monday at 4 p.m. at against top-seeded Malcolm.  You can hear the game on KZ-100.
