Elton John: I'm “too old” to do a James Bond theme

ABC/Randy HolmesThe list of artists who’ve recorded James Bond themes over the years include the likes of Paul McCartney, Adele, Sheryl Crow, Madonna, Carly Simon, Tina Turner and Gladys Knight.  One artist who hasn’t done a Bond theme is Elton John — but he predicts he never will.

Elton recently interviewed Sam Smith for the British gay magazine Attitude, and when the talk turned to Sam’s Oscar-winning Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall,” Sam asked Elton, “Would you do a Bond theme?  Have you ever been asked?”

“No, I’ve never been asked,” reveals Elton.  “You’d be fantastic,” gushes Sam. “I’m too old now,” Elton responds, adding, “They have diversified over the years, but it’s for young people now to write one. That’s the direction they’ve gone.”

In the same interview, Elton compares the friendly competition between Sam and Ed Sheeran to himself and Rod Stewart back in the day.

“We protected each other,” Elton explains. “Rod and I were competitive with each other, and that’s healthy because it drives you, but we loved and supported each other, too. I think perhaps you and Ed Sheeran are the same way…you do both love each other, you both admire each other and are going through the same thing…at the same age.”

Sam will do a benefit concert to raise money for Elton’s AIDS Foundation November 29 in London.
