In honor of the 60th anniversary of Stax Records, Rhino Entertainment and Concord Music Group have partnered to launch a yearlong celebration of the legendary Memphis soul label.
The initiative begins today with the release of series of single-artist compilations dubbed Stax Classics, including albums focusing on Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the M.G.’s and Carla Thomas.
Each retrospective features 12 memorable tracks and newly penned liner notes, and is available on CD and as a digital download for $9.98.
Stax Classics: Otis Redding features such enduring hits as “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Try a Little Tenderness” and “Respect.” The Sam & Dave collection includes the duo’s signature tune “Soul Man,” as well as “Hold On! I’m a Comin'” and “I Thank You.”
The Booker T. & the M.G.’s best-of features the Stax house band’s smash instrumentals “Green Onions” and “Time Is Tight.” Stax Classics: Carla Thomas boasts Thomas’ 1966 top 20 hit “B-A-B-Y” and her memorable duet with Redding, “Tramp.”
Stax Classics compilations focusing on The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, William Bell and The Dramatics and others also are available now.
In addition to the Stax Classics collections, a variety of albums from the Stax catalog will be reissued on 180-gram vinyl for a list price of $21.98. The first wave of these vinyl discs will arrive on June 23 and include Soul Men by Sam & Dave, Green Onions by Booker T. & the M.G.’s and a 50th anniversary, gold-vinyl edition of Otis Redding and Carla Thomas’ King and Queen.
Another round of vinyl reissues from Redding, Sam & Dave, Thomas and Booker T. & the M.G.’s will hit stores on July 7.
