The Howells-Dodge girls knocked off one Cinderella team in Friday’s semifinals of the C2 state basketball tournament in Lincoln. The Jaguars will look to beat another one in Saturday’s championship game.
In a game aired on 93.5 The Hawk, third-seeded Howells-Dodge fought off number-7 seed Ponca 47-44 Friday afternoon at the Devaney Sports Center. Sam Brester scored 22 points, including a 10-for-12 performance at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and Macey Kulhanek chipped in 12 points for the Jaguars.
The win improved Howells-Dodge to 24-3 and sends the Jaguars into the title tilt against number-8 seed Diller-Odell. A day after shocking five-time defending C2 champion Crofton 52-45, the Griffins (22-4) disposed of fourth-seeded Ravenna 59-46 Saturday.
After finishing third in 2015 and as state runner-up last season – both years in D1 – Howells-Dodge goes for its first state title against a Diller-Odell squad making its first appearance at the state tourney since 2004.
Tipoff Saturday is set for 4:30 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena. You can hear the action once again on KKOT, Columbus.
