Husker DB, Columbus Native Joe Blahak Dies

Former Nebraska defensive back Joe Blahak, a member of the Huskers’ national championship teams in 1970 and ’71, has died.  The native of Columbus died Monday of an apparent heart attack.  He was 65.

Blahak was best remembered for throwing a key block to clear the way for Johnny Rodgers’ 72-yard punt return for a touchdown in the 1971 “Game of the Century” against Oklahoma.  That was a key play in NU’s 35-31 victory.

Blahak was named All-Big Eight in 1971-72 and went on to play for four teams over five seasons in the NFL.

His memorial service is set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lincoln.
