All livestock producers, custom applicators, consultants, and anyone interested in efficient and effective manure utilization are invited to attend. CCA credits are available for certified crop advisors. NDEQ Land Application Recertification Credit is available for manure applicators.
The 2014 Manure Demonstration Day will be a smaller version of the North American Manure Expo, held in Norfolk, NE, in 2011. The event will be similar, but will focus on the manure industry in the state of Nebraska rather than nationally. Participants can view vendor exhibits, demonstrations, and will have opportunities to learn more about manure management and handling.
There will be two educational tracks during the day. One is titled: Managing What We Can’t See in Manure and will include sessions on introduction to manure microbiology, antimicrobial resistant bacteria and the environment, manure runoff management for small open lots, managing manure to avoid spreading PEDV, and large animal composting. The other track is titled: Connecting Manure and Fields and includes sessions on soil health: why does it matter and how do we measure it, manure vs. commercial fertilizer: can soil and crops tell the difference, putting a value on manure, volatilization losses from sprinkler applied nitrogen, management of phosphorus on cropland, and vegetative treatment systems: alternatives in Nebraska.
There are a full set of exhibitors secured for the event. There will also be field demonstrations. This promises to be a very good educational event, and I encourage producers and anyone interested in the manure resource to attend.
I should also mention that the annual Crop Management Diagnostic Clinics will be held in mid-July at the Ag Research and Development Center near Mead, Nebraska. Go to http://cropwatch.unl.edu for details about the event and to get registration information.
