Beef and Trans Fats - No Comparison

A recent column by Troy Marshall focused on the Food and Drug Administration’s plans to require the food industry to gradually phase out trans fats and what that could mean for beef producers. The column warned beef producers that beef could one day be on the hit list of foods the nutritional activists want to ban. But blogger Amanda Radke notes beef has a nutritional profile that’s hard to beat. Unlike trans fats - Radke points out that beef isn’t made via an industrial process - it’s a whole food that offers a nutritional power punch like nothing else.

During a recent cooking demonstration - Radke heard about emerging research that defies the myth that beef isn’t healthy. Researchers from Penn State University found that people who participated in their BOLD - Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet - study and consumed lean beef daily as part of a heart-healthy diet - experienced a 10-percent decline in bad cholesterol. In addition - Radke says beef’s fatty profile is heart healthy. Fifty-one-percent of the fat found in beef is mono-unsaturated. That’s the same heart-healthy fats found in olive oil. Beef is also packed with nutrients like zinc, iron, protein and the B vitamins.

According to Radke - the industry should focus on re-educating the public that beef can be the center of a healthy dinner plate. Bottom line - Radke says beef is nothing like trans fats.
