Arrest made in G.I. murder investigation



GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Police in Grand Island have arrested a Glenvil man in connection with a murder in the downtown area Wednesday.

58-year-old Michael L. Petersen is being charged with 1st Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm to commit a felony in the death of Grand Island attorney Todd Elsbernd. He's being held in Hall County Detention Center.

A press release from the Grand Island police department says Petersen was taken into custody around 5:30pm this evening in Hastings by Adams County Sheriff's deputies and Nebraska State troopers. Petersen was reportedly armed but did not resist arrest.

Petersen is accused of shooting Elsbernd Wednesday night on Locust St. Elsbernd was shot in the stomach and transported to an area hospital where he later died. It's believed that Elsbernd was targeted in the shooting.

Petersen is scheduled to appear in Hall County Court Friday morning.
