Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry made the following statement after supporting legislation to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline:
“I have said for a long time that we need a strategic energy partnership with the Canadians, but it must respect our environmental concerns. Many good Nebraskans rightly expressed reservations about the initial location of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Some also expressed concern about TransCanada’s bullying tactics and indifference to their perspective. Thanks to Nebraskans, the pipeline has been moved to a better, safer route that avoids the environmentally sensitive Sandhills area of our state.
“I would have preferred that the President settle the issue in a timely manner without Congressional intervention. Some Nebraskans still object to the pipeline and I respect their view. In a vote before the U.S. House of Representatives last year, I did not support the premature approval of the pipeline. However, the problems initially identified have been reasonably addressed, which is why I supported the legislation today.”
