2-20-12, LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska lawmakers are set to begin work on the state's version of health insurance reform. Two bills to create the Nebraska Health Benefit Exchange Act come up for debate Tuesday.
Sen. Rich Pahls of Boys Town and Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha each have introduced a bill that would create a state exchange. Unless states have such operations established by 2014, the federal government can create its own exchanges for states.
Officials in some states have delayed action in hopes that the U.S. Supreme Court will rule the federal health reforms are unconstitutional, but the Nebraska senators say they want to move ahead in hopes of helping people buy affordable, quality health care coverage.
Lawmakers will take up the matter after returning from a four-day break.
