Health insurance exchange proposal go to committee next week

2-14-12, COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Legislature’s Banking, Commerce, and Insurance committee will get their first look next week at a pair of proposals for creating a health benefit exchange. Columbus Senator Paul Schumacher is on the committee and talked about the purpose for the proposals.

“Some portions of the federal health care act may or may not be in danger,” Schumacher said Friday, referring to the pending legal fight in U.S. Supreme Court regarding the Affordable Care Act. “But probably the exchange portion of it won’t be in danger. So let’s not run the risk of having the feds make the rules. Let’s have the locals make the rules.”

A proposal must be voted on this session for a state-based exchange to be set up by 2014.
