2-8-12, COLUMBUS, Neb. - Don’t bet on Nebraska getting casino gambling anytime soon.By a five to one vote, the legislature’s General Affairs committee voted against a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow casino gambling in Nebraska.
The proposal by Columbus Senator Paul Schumacher would have given Nebraska voters the right to decide if they want casino gambling in the state. Schumacher offered the proposal because the state is losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year from Nebraska residents to casinos in adjacent states.
Missouri, Kansas, and South Dakota all offer casino gambling.
Only a petition drive can now get the measure on the November ballot.
