Nebraska measure would expand lawmaker term limits

2-1-12, LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska lawmakers could serve three back-to-back terms in office under a proposed constitutional amendment that would give voters the opportunity to expand the time they can serve.

Holdrege Sen. Tom Carlson will present the measure Wednesday to the Legislature's Executive Board.

Nebraska's term limits for lawmakers went into effect in 2006, after voters approved them in 2000. The current limit bars senators from serving more than two consecutive four-year terms, but allows them to run again if they sit out for one term.

Carlson's proposal would allow lawmakers to serve up to three consecutive terms, if voters approve the amendment.

Nebraska's one-house Legislature prevents lawmakers from seeking office in another legislative chamber, as is common in many states with term limits.
