1-17-12, LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The number of bankruptcies filed in Nebraska has fallen about 17 percent in the past year.Data from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Nebraska District says more than 6,600 bankruptcies were filed in the state in 2011, compared with nearly 8,000 in 2010.
That was the lowest total since 2007.
The national decline in 2011 was 12 percent.
Rick Lange is a Lincoln attorney who serves as a bankruptcy trustee. He says the decline likely is a result of a combination of factors.
They include an improving economy, programs that help people reduce their mortgage payments and people's reluctance to take on new debt.
