Proposal could raise Neb. lawmaker salaries

1-11-12, LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Nebraska lawmaker has proposed a constitutional amendment that would raise lawmaker salaries to $32,000 a year.

The measure (LR373CA) introduced Tuesday by Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh would place the issue on the November general election ballot.

State lawmakers currently make $12,000 a year. The new pay rate would take effect on Jan. 9, 2013 if approved.

Ballot measures in Nebraska require a simple majority of yes votes to pass. But the number of yes votes cast for a measure must be greater than 35 percent of the total votes cast in the election.
