LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Oral chemotherapy would be treated the same as intravenous cancer treatments for insurance purposes under a bill introduced in the Nebraska Legislature.Sen. Jeremy Nordquist on Monday introduced his plan to allow doctors and patients, not insurance companies, to decide the type of cancer treatment that is most appropriate.
Nordquist said IV and oral medications typically fall under different benefit plans, and oral medicines usually cost more.
The Omaha senator said his bill (LB882) would ensure that patients battling cancer can afford the drugs that best suit their course of treatment.
He said the measure would allow families to focus all of their energy on recovery, not whether or not they can afford to follow the doctor's orders.
