Lincoln, NE~~Statewide turnout for the May primary was lower than expected. Secretary of State John Gale says based on early estimates, 27 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Gale speculated that turnout might reach 30 percent, fueled in part by the highly contested U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races.
Gale says at least 17 counties did have better than 50 percent voter turnout. McPherson County had the highest turnout at 67 percent. Thomas, Keya Paha, Banner and Loup counties rounded out the top five for voter turnout.
Results from the statewide election will be certified on June 11 by the State Canvassing Board.
