Johanns Calls on President to Enforce Immigration Laws, Stop Illegal Smuggling of Children Into U.S.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R- Neb.) and a bipartisan group of Senators sent a letter to President Obama urging him to enforce our nation’s immigration laws. The letter specifically urges him to send a clear message that anyone entering the country illegally will not be given special treatment or deferred action. The letter comes as the United States is experiencing an influx of unaccompanied children from Central America.

“The President’s decision to ignore the laws on the books has created this humanitarian crisis,” Johanns said. “We are a nation of laws and giving the perception that de facto amnesty is available to children being smuggled across the border illegally only encourages the dangerous journey.”

During last year’s Senate immigration debate, Johanns called for strengthening border security and streamlining our immigration system – without rewarding those who entered our country illegally.
