Humphrey High Student Killed In Car Accident

Humphrey, NE~~The investigation into a crash that killed an 18-year-old Humphrey High School student continues.  The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says Tamera Jo Thomas of Humphrey died in the two vehicle accident which occurred around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of 385th Street and 310th Avenue, or 1 mile west of Tarnov. 

Investigators say Thomas was southbound on 310th Avenue and failed to stop at a posted intersection when she was struck by an eastbound vehicle eastbound vehicle driven by 83 year-old James Schmidt of rural Monroe.  The impact caused Thomas’ vehicle to roll down an embankment coming to rest in a drainage ditch. 

Thomas and her passenger, 15-year-old Crystal Brandl were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision and were both ejected.  Schmidt, who was alone at the time, was wearing his seatbelt. 

Both Schmidt and Brandl were transported to the Columbus hospital were they were treated for their injuries.  Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
