Fremont dad gets jail for leaving kids before fire

1-18-12, FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - A Fremont father whose three children were rescued from their burning mobile home has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Alex Tepepexteco-Ortega was sentenced Tuesday in Dodge County District Court. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of child abuse in December.

His wife, Kellie, also pleaded no contest to child abuse and was sentenced in November to 90 days in jail.

Authorities say they weren't home when the fire broke out last July. A passer-by rescued the children, ages 8, 3, and 1.

Officials say the fire was started by a child paying with a lighter.

Officials say the couple told investigators they were at the hospital, but he was at a friend's house while she was at a store.
