Movie Review: "The Other Woman"

Fox(NEW YORK) -- The Other Woman stars Cameron Diaz as Carly, a kick-butt lawyer who looks like, well, Cameron Diaz, and never gets played for a fool by the many men she dates. It’s impossible to find a worthy guy in the big city until Mark (Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Costar-Waldau) comes along.  Could this handsome, seemingly rich investment professional be the one? Even Carly's assistant, played by rapper Nikki Minaj, thinks he might, since Carly is actually calling him by his first name, rather than a dehumanizing nickname. But we learn a few minutes into the movie that Mark is actually married to Kate, played with gusto and unwavering commitment by the great Leslie Mann.  Kate doesn’t seem particularly smart, given that her husband has been cheating on her for a few months, possibly longer, and she doesn’t suspect a thing. Mark's lies begin to catch up with him when Carly decides to surprise him at his home, and Kate answers the door.  What ensues is an unlikely friendship between wife and mistress. After all, Carly had no idea Mark was married, and Kate has nobody to turn to for comfort, because she shares all of her friends with Mark.  Things really get out of hand when Kate and Carly realize Mark is cheating on both of them with Amber, played by Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton.  Though she's not asked to stretch much beyond what she might do in a photo shoot, you can see Upton's potential as an actress: to her credit, she holds her own with two proven comedy talents. The Other Woman lacks an organic flow and often drags, bogged down with unnecessary sentimentality.  The movie's laugh-out-loud funny moments are thanks to Diaz and Mann’s commitment to do anything for a laugh.  Mann in particular has never been better.  But what could’ve been a smart revenge comedy is instead absurd and predictable, relying too much on Diaz and Mann’s physical comedy, at times reducing both of them to vacuous archetypes.  Two-and-a-half out of five stars.Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Despite Success, Debra Messing Says Hollywood Still Sexist

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Overture Films(NEW YORK) -- You would never think Debra Messing would have trouble finding a great role, but the Will & Grace star, 45, said there are still "inequities" in Hollywood when it comes to men and women."It's well-known that it's not equally represented for women. It's just a struggle we are going to try and continue and rectify," she told ABC News. "Whether or not it's above the title, executive producing or directing, or even writer categories."She added that even "the best roles" and "stories written" are usually skewed towards men. But Messing is not complaining and having great opportunities in Will & Grace, Smash and now her new show The Mysteries of Laura, is something she is very thankful for."Having said that there's so much talent out there and I'm always looking for the thing that's going to move me," she added. "There have been obvious disappointments along the road, whether it has been a coveted role, where I'm one of a thousand women who want that role and it's not going to go my way. And you sort of sit back and say, 'Why aren't' there 50 roles like that, that are available right now.'"She continued, "[But] on the whole I feel incredibly blessed. There have been roles along the way that have spoken to me or moved me and I feel like The Mysteries of Laura is one of those special, special roles!"In the new show that just filmed its pilot, Messing plays Detective Laura Diamond, who is also a mother when she is off-duty, something the actress can relate to. Messing is busy on Broadway and filming this pilot, but still finds time to spend with her 10-year-old son Roman."I don't think there are many tricks," she said of finding time to be with her son. "When you are not working, you have tons of time for your personal life and the people in your life and you can make that time special. Obviously when you work, it's intense."But even when she is working, she and her son adapt."We just work together," she added. "When I did the Broadway play, it was three months, so we knew I was only going to be working at night. We just made our time in the morning and our time before I went to the theater.""You just have to be flexible," she said of helping Roman with his homework, watching TV or even eating together. "It's not always easy and not always ideal. But it's all for the right reasons -- to be a consistent a parent as possible."Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Hollywood Executive Releases Statement Denying Sex Abuse Claims

Director Bryan Singer. Alberto E. Rodriguez/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Attorneys for one of the Hollywood executives being sued by director Bryan Singer's accuser have released a new statement denying the sex abuse allegations made by the plaintiff.Michael Egan, 31, has claimed that Gary Goddard and two other executives, David Neuman and Garth Ancier, abused him when he was a teenager at an Encino, Calif., home, and in Hawaii.Goddard's attorneys say in their statement that their client "was not in Hawaii with Mr. Egan. He did not molest or touch or annoy Mr. Egan or commit any of the acts alleged. Also, he did not furnish drugs or alcohol to any minor at any time."The statement continues, "We have also reviewed the complaints filed against other defendants by Mr. Egan. The 'cookie-cutter' allegations in all of the complaints filed by Mr. Egan are so fantastical as to be unbelievable on their face."Goddard directed the 1987 He-Man movie Masters of the Universe and has helped create theme park attractions for Universal Studios.Ancier, Neuman and Singer -- the latter of whom was named in Egan's first lawsuit, filed last week -- previously denied the allegations made against them by Egan, who is represented by attorney Jeff Herman.Herman also represented plaintiffs who brought three sex abuse cases against former Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash.  The U.S. Court of Appeals threw out the cases this month, agreeing with a previous decision by a New York judge to dismiss the complaints, according to People magazine.Herman tells the magazine, "The case was dismissed because of the statute of limitations. There is no ruling on the merits."Another, similar case against Clash is still pending.Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Cameron Diaz Clarifies Anti-Monogamy Comments

Raymond Hall/GC Images(NEW YORK) -- Cameron Diaz recently made headlines for her thoughts on monogamy, telling InStyle magazine, "I don't know if anyone is really naturally monogamous. We all have the same instincts as animals. But we live in a society where it's been ingrained in us to do these things."But the actress cleared the air Wednesday on Good Morning America about what she really meant about having a solo sexual partner."Monogamy, I think, is a very important part of relationships working," Diaz, 41, told GMA co-host Lara Spencer, adding that she was previously referring to her character's beliefs in her upcoming film, The Other Woman, rather than her own."My character said she doesn't believe in monogamy and then somehow journalists were like, 'So, you don't believe in monogamy?' And I'm like, 'That is my character. You know I'm acting, right?'" Diaz explained. In the new romantic comedy hitting theaters Friday, Diaz plays a sexy single woman who discovers she's dating a married man. The confusion surrounding her comments on monogamy stemmed from the publication's interview where she said, "A lot of people chase after it because they've been told, 'This equals happiness.' They chase it, they get it, and then they find out, 'Why did I think this was going to make me happy? I'm miserable.'"It's a sentiment the blond bombshell echoed on the BBC's The Graham Norton Show earlier this month."I'm like, 'Relax. It's OK if you did.' Everybody gets cheated on," she explained.Of course, the A-lister has not shied away from serious relationships. She has been linked to some of Hollywood's leading men, from Justin Timberlake to Jared Leto to baseball star Alex Rodriguez."I'm grateful for all of it, whether it was something quick and passing or something that lingered too long," she told the publication. "There is not one thing I've been through that hasn't been a lesson that led me to this moment, and I can't believe how great life keeps getting." Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Justin Bieber Apologizes Following Shrine Controversy

John Paul Filo/CBS(NEW YORK) -- Justin Bieber has apparently learned his lesson.During a trip to Tokyo earlier this week, the singer stopped at the Yasukuni Shrine, then tweeted an homage to the shrine.Only problem was that the Yasukuni Shrine was founded in the late 1800s and honors more than two million Japanese who died in combat from the Boshin War in 1868 through the end of World War II. But it also honors convicted war criminals that are categorized Class A -- crimes against peace -- stemming from mass murders across Asia during World War II.After Chinese fans urged Bieber to take his positive tweet down, he did so and posted an apology Wednesday morning."While in Japan I asked my driver to pull over for which I saw a beautiful shrine," he wrote. "I was mislead to think the shrines were only a place of prayer. To anyone I have offended I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan."Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Hollywood Executives Deny Allegations Made by Bryan Singer's Accuser

Mark Davis/Getty Images for EJAF(LOS ANGELES) -- The three Hollywood executives accused of sexual abuse by the man who is suing X-Men director Bryan Singer over similar allegations are denying the claims made against them.Michael Egan, 31, claims in lawsuits filed this week that he was abused by Garth Ancier, David Neuman and Gary Goddard when he was a teenager.A lawyer for Ancier, the former head of programming for Fox and NBC, says in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter that the claims are "demonstrably untrue." The statement continues, "As just one of many examples, Mr. Ancier has never even visited the estate in Hawaii where the plaintiff claims to have encountered him."An attorney for Goddard, who has helped create theme park attractions for Universal Studios, said in an email to The Hollywood Reporter that Goddard is currently in China and a proper statement will be released in "due course but needless to say this is without merit."Neuman, a former president of Disney TV, addressed the allegations against him on his Twitter feed, calling them "disgusting and COMPLETELY FALSE." He added, "Also very shocking in that they don’t just stretch the truth, they are whole-cloth lies with zero basis in reality or truth. Sickening, and very evil, for anyone to lie like that, let alone in a legal document."The lawsuits against the executives were filed just days after Egan filed a similar complaint against Singer. The director's attorney has said the claims against Singer are "completely fabricated."Singer's latest film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, opens on May 23.Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Kevin Spacey OK with Former President Clinton Dropping "House of Cards" Spoilers

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Former President Bill Clinton may have dropped a couple of House of Cards spoilers at a recent benefit concert, but the lead star of the Netflix series, Kevin Spacey, has no problem with that.Clinton and Spacey were among the top names who attended Sting's Rainforest Benefit Concert in New York City last Thursday night. As he addressed the crowd, the 42nd U.S. president poked fun at Spacey's character on House of Cards, Frank Underwood. He joked, "When I was president, people accused me of murder all the time! Made a show of investigating it! Spacey's president for 15 minutes, and he gets away with murder!"That last line contains two spoilers from the second season of House of Cards, which premiered in February: Spacey killing Kate Mara's journalist character, Zoe Barnes, and his character making the jump from vice president to president.Spacey normally discourages people from discussing spoilers, but he makes an exception in Clinton's case. He pointed out to ABC News Radio that the event was not televised. He added, "If he wants to be the spoiler-in-chief that's entirely up to him. He's a good man, it was great of him to have shown up, and we had some fun on stage together."Much like he did at the Rainforest Benefit Concert, Spacey imitated Clinton: "I love that show because 99 percent of what they do in that show, it's real. And the one percent they got wrong, you could never get an education bill passed that fast."Aside from House of Cards, you'll soon be able to catch Spacey in the documentary NOW: in the Wings on a World Stage. He collaborated with his American Beauty director, Sam Mendes, on the film, which chronicles their touring production of the Shakespeare tragedy Richard III.NOW: in the Wings on a World Stage will screen in select theaters and be made available for download on May 2. Watch Emma Stone Make Andrew Garfield Eat His Words About What's Feminine

Andreas Rentz/Getty Images for Sony Pictures(NEW YORK) -- Emma Stone certainly keeps Andrew Garfield on his toes.During a recent Q&A about their new film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Stone challenged her real-life boyfriend when he called sewing "feminine."Asked by a child how Spider-Man got his costume, Garfield, 30, replied that he made it after taking sewing and needlepoint classes."It's kind of a feminine thing to do," he added, "but he really kind of made a very masculine costume."Stone, 25, piped up, asking, "It's feminine, how?" -- prompting Garfield to respond, "It's amazing how you took that as an insult."However, he immediately began to backpedal, and even threw in a personal story about his family."I would say that femininity is about more delicacy and precision and detail work and craftsmanship — like my mother, she’s an amazing craftsman. She in fact made my first Spider-Man costume when I was three. So I use it as a compliment. To compliment the feminine not just in women but in men as well. We all have feminine in us, young men."Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
