Watch Little Steven's fun video for his new cover of The Ramones' 1987 Christmas tune

Courtesy of Little StevenLast Friday, E Street Band guitarist “Little Steven” Van Zandt and his side group The Disciples of Soul released a cover of The Ramones‘ yuletide gem “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight)” as a holiday single, and now the band has debuted an official video for the tune.

The fun clip, which premiered Thursday on Billboard.com, features footage of Van Zandt and his Disciples on a beach in Barcelona, Spain, and in New York City wearing Santa Claus, elf and reindeer costumes as they mime their performance of the tune using toy instruments. Interspersed throughout the video are scenes from various old movies, including 1902’s A Trip to the Moon and 1964’s Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

“A couple weeks ago it occurred to me, ‘Geez, we should have a video to go with us,'” Van Zandt tells Billboard about the clip. “I thought, ‘Well, we could just record us playing it live at some gig,’ but it didn’t seem like enough. It didn’t seem to be in the spirit of the thing, y’know? You want to have some fun.'”

Van Zandt arranged and produced the track, which was recorded live last month during soundcheck before a Disciples of Soul concert in Utrecht, Netherlands. The song can be purchased now at digital retailers and also is available via streaming services.

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul will close out their 2017 itinerary with concert on Saturday, December 23 at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. Van Zandt assembled a new version of the Disciples to tour in support of his new solo album Soulfire, which came out in May.

He tells Billboard he plans to continue touring with the group when Bruce Springsteen is busy with projects not involving the E Street Band.
