ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons and ex-Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes are among the many musicians who’ve contributed to a tribute album to Elmore James in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the late blues pioneer’s birth. Strange Angels: In Flight with Elmore James will be released January 26, 2018, a day before what would have been the slide-guitar legend’s 100th birthday.
Gibbons and Haynes appear on a rendition of “Mean Mistreatin’ Mama” that also features acclaimed harmonica player Mickey Raphael. The 13-track album also features a variety of other artists, including British pop idol Tom Jones, contemporary bluesman Keb Mo’, and country singers Jamey Johnson, Rodney Crowell, Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer.
In addition, late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham‘s sister, Deborah, and late Small Faces/Humble Pie frontman Steve Marriott‘s daughter, Mollie, contribute their own James covers to the collection.
Strange Angels was produced by Marco Giovino, who played drums several years ago with Robert Plant‘s backing group, Band of Joy. He also played drums on many of if the tribute album’s tracks.
All profits from sales of Strange Angels will benefit the MusiCares charity, which supports in-need members of the music community, and Edible Schoolyard NYC, an organization that helps provide garden and kitchen classes to New York City schools.
James was known as the “King of the Slide Guitar,” and for his distorted amplified sound and his powerful voice. Among the many musicians he influenced were Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones‘ Brian Jones, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and George Thorogood. James died of a heart attack in May 1963 at the age of 45.
